Does taking a leave of absence affect my pension?

At some point in your career, you may take an employer-approved leave of absence:

  • Maternity leave
  • Parental or adoption leave
  • Compassionate care leave

When you take an approved leave of absence, you are not making contributions or accruing service under the plan. You do have the opportunity to buy back the service that you would have accrued had you been working during your leave of absence.

Read the Purchasing leaves of absence PensionFacts to find out more about:

  • How a leave of absence affects your pension
  • The types of leave you can buy back
  • Important deadlines you need to keep in mind

You can use the personalized Purchase Cost Estimator in My Account and its companion guide, Using the Personalized Purchase Cost Estimator to work out an estimate of how much it will cost you to buy back your period of leave.

Use the Personalized Purchase Cost Estimator Personal Worksheet to help you determine if it’s worthwhile for you to buyback your service.
