Pension plan improvements and the implications for RRSPs The College Pension Plan recently made significant changes to its pension benefits and the way they are calculated. These changes take effect January 1, 2002. The changes include an increase to the lifetime portion of your pension. Since the changes increase the College Pension Plan benefit for past years, the RRSP room you were allowed in the past must be reduced. The increased pension benefit value will generate a past service pension adjustment (PSPA), which will decrease your RRSP room. RRSP room is calculated as the difference between 18 per cent of your income and the value of your pension. If the value of your pension changes, so will your RRSP room. Pension Plan Improvements The College Pension Board of Trustees recently approved changes to the College Pension Plan. The changes were agreed upon by the plan partners—Province of British Columbia, Post Secondary Employers Association, College Institute Educator’s Association and British Columbia Government and Service Employees Union.
