Looking ahead: the investment market outlook for 2014

The Teachers’ Pension Plan has a long-term investment horizon and is able to withstand short-term market volatility. The Teachers’ Pension Board of Trustees and the BC Investment Management Corporation remain focused on holding a well-diversified portfolio that follows a disciplined, long-term approach to managing the plan’s funds.

  • With the backdrop of increased economic and financial stability, global stock markets have experienced a strong start to 2014.
  • In the U.S., there are signs of improvement in housing, business investment and employment.
  • With inflation below two per cent in Canada and the U.S., and economies operating below capacity, the respective central banks are maintaining low interest rates to stimulate economic growth.
  • The European Central Bank has also implemented policies to stimulate economic growth.
  • Geopolitical risks are heightened as evidenced by recent events in Ukraine and Russia. Furthermore, a continued slowdown in China could dampen world economic growth.
